This Western Screech-Owl flew right in front of our car in Silverado Canyon, California (Dec 2005) and landed on this branch right next to the road. This owl is very unique for a Western Screech since I so rarely see such large ear tufts on this species. Another very unique thing is how light in color his bill is. This happens to be a very good example of how difficult it is to tell the difference between the screech-owls by appearence alone. Maybe the only thing that distinguishes this owl from an Eastern Screech-Owl is the thick vertical chest streaks. Eastern Screech Owls tend to have narrower vertical chest streaks. Once again the noticable difference seems only to be in their vocalization not appearence.
