This Striped Owl was perched on a support wire along the roadside near Jaco, Costa Rica. My impression was that this was a young male owl. It seemed to be just slightly smaller than the other birds we had been seeing which would indicate it was a male. The slightly lighter color tones on its back and on the border of his facial disk might indicate that his dark markings were not completely developed. Add to this his choice of perch (inexperience?) and what appeared to be soft new feathering. Young or old this owl was very beautiful and a wonderful sight.
