This is the same owl that is the previous picture. This picture was taken on the same morning (as Picture 2) in Paso Robles, California in early January 2003. By comparing the two photos, two things stand out. The owl is hooting here and you can see how they cock their tail up while vocalizing. Second is how apparent its white throat is while vocalizing. In the previous photo the white of the throat is not overly noticable.
